In this variation, players do not have the option of trading back cards to the dealer. Players receive two cards facedown (whose value is known only to the player) and one card face-up, visible to all. The first round of betting involves the players’ assessment of these cards. After this, those who haven’t folded will be dealt an additional two facedown cards. Then follows a final round of betting during which players can raise, call, or fold.
Seven Card Stud is played exactly the same as its five-card variation, the difference being that with more cards in a hand, the player has greater odds of getting a strong playable hand.
This is currently the most popular version of poker, and also the most complex. Players are dealt two facedown—or “hole”—cards, known only to the player. These they play against five face-up cards in a community hand, in a series of deals called “the flop,” “the turn,” and “the river.” Betting occurs after each deal, with the stakes raising as usual in poker.
