Midpoint

Now we’re getting to one of the key moments of the screenplay. This is an event halfway into the script which changes everything for the protagonist. It changes the way they think about the conflict, escalates the level of tension and intensity, and increases the stakes.

While many elements combine to make any scene great, in general there are three keys to a great midpoint:

First, this is a moment of complete failure and defeat for the protagonist. It is a low point that will have them rethinking their strategy going forward into the conflict.

Second, a major layer is usually revealed about the antagonist—often causing the protagonist to realize the situation is much worse than previously thought.

Third, a great midpoint keeps the conflict the same but changes the meaning of that conflict for both protagonist and, hopefully, the audience.

To make a great midpoint:

  • How can that failure force them to rethink their strategy and open themselves to the idea of change?
  • What hidden layer about the antagonist, the situation, or the conflict can be revealed here?
  • How does this event keep the story the same but change the meaning?
